Undredal Stave Church

Undredal Stave Church

The Undredal Stave Church is Scandinavia's smallest stave church still in use. Built around 1147, this charming wooden church offers a glimpse into Norway's medieval past.

Undredal Stave Church, constructed circa 1147, stands as one of Norway's 28 remaining stave churches and is renowned as the smallest of its kind still in use in Scandinavia. Measuring approximately 12 by 4 meters, the church accommodates about 40 visitors, reflecting the intimate scale of the Undredal community. Originally known as St. Nicholas Chapel, the church has undergone several restorations, notably in 1722 and 1962, which unveiled ancient decorative wall paintings and a domed ceiling adorned with stars and biblical figures.

The interior features a 17th-century pulpit and a medieval chandelier, adding to its historical charm. Despite its modest size, Undredal Stave Church offers a rich cultural experience, showcasing traditional Norwegian ecclesiastical architecture amidst the stunning backdrop of the Aurlandsfjord.
